PRISON BREAK SERIES
Many years ago, I remember starting a lunch-time bible study group for students in a Christian School. I noted that a number of students who were attracted to this group were those who had some social and emotional development problems. They struggled to form meaningful and lasting friendships with other students. In addition, there were other students who came along who had other challenges in their lives. These were students were struggling with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, anger management and addictions. What amazed me about these two groups of students were that in terms of bible knowledge and prayer, they were quite confident and spiritually ‘well-literate’. I soon discovered that it was possible to have a high spiritual/biblical IQ and yet struggle with social/emotional and mental ill-health.
Presently, as most of you understand, our western society is suffering the effects of mental ill-health in epidemic proportions. Many in our own church family are struggling with mental health issues as life seems to place more and more pressure on all of us.
The good news is that the bible has many answers to these growing social problems that are literally crippling both the lives of individuals and families. Jesus Christ came for the purpose of setting the ‘captives free’ and to bring lifelong healing to many. The Prison Break Series is a practical series of bible-based messages aimed at helping people work through common personal issues as described above.
At the start of June, we will commence this 10 week preaching series. In addition to the weekly sermons, discussion sessions will be available to our small groups if they wish to engage at a deeper level.
Lastly, I would like to encourage each church member to take the opportunity to reach out and personally invite your friends, neighbours and family members to church as these sermon topics could be very relevant to them. Let’s pray that God will use the Prison Break Series to bring hope, healing, freedom and justice to many people who feel like they are living a life bound up in a prison.
